Work Readiness & Employee/Employer Relationships

Target Market:

This programme is designed for all employees and learners who needs to participate and function effectively as in individual and team member in the workplace.

Purpose

This workshop empowers delegates to:

Workplace readiness practicum provides a variety of activities to help individuals become familiar with and practice the skills that employers expect from employees. Learning these skills is essential to the success of the learners in the workplace, at home, and in the community. Real-world activities give the learner the opportunity to practice essential skills and foster confidence. This practice will help the youth to understand the importance of learning the skills to apply to their daily lives.

Objectives

• Understand the skills employers expect from employees.
• Understand the importance of good communication skills for interactions with employers,
coworkers, and supervisors/leaders.
• Understand the importance of being on time, following through on directions, and
producing quality work.
• Understand social and interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication,
professional behaviour, teamwork, and problem-solving.
• Gain awareness of independent living skills including good hygiene, time management,
money management, using transportation, and community resources.
Understand employment relations and legislation BCEA/LRA & company code of conduct
Understand job seeking techniques.

Training Content

Module 1: Business etiquette & code of conduct
• Understand what constitutes misconduct and the consequences of misconduct.
• Understand the importance of an ethical and legal framework.
• Highlight the behaviour expected between work colleagues, service users and customers.
• Know what to do in specific situations such as, accepting gifts and hospitality, conflicts of
interest and how to report any concerns of misconduct.

Module 2: Problem solving & critical thinking
• Learning to solve problem in a variety of ways in the workplace.
• Properly tell the difference among criticism, praise, and feedback and reacting appropriately.
• Review strategies for making ethical decisions, solving problems on a team with others.
• Learning how to consider others’ perceptions when assessing actions or statements in the workplace.

Module 3: Money management
• Understand basic mathematical skills in the workplace
• Understand the importance of managing their personal finances
• Understand how their attitude can affect their personal finance
• Understand basic budgeting for day-to-day living
• Set personal goals to be able to pay monthly bills

Module 4: Effective time management
• Creating, Using and Maintaining a Task List
• Planning Proactively
• Using and Maintaining an Effective Diary System
• Procrastination, Prioritising and Productivity
• Planning and Following a Work Schedule
• Essential Time Management Skills
• Basics of Time and Stress Management

Module 5: Communication

• Understand the importance of being specific when offering and receiving communication
• Encourage youth to discuss the different types of communication they might use in different situations and environments
• Gain a better understanding of how non-verbal communication (both intended and unintended) can be interpreted by others…and the impact and effect of this form of communication.
• Discuss the importance of understanding directions before you start a task.

 

Module 6: Enthusiasm & attitude
• Learners take difficult situations and find ways to EMPOWER themselves to turn negative
thinking into positive thinking
• Understand that failure is not something to fear and in fact often a necessary step on the
path to success
• Learners focus on the different attitudes that can be (and have been) displayed during a job
interview/review

Module 7: Teamwork
• To enrich learners’ understanding of what it means to be part of a team and why being a good team player is important for career success
• Learners engage in a discussion of some of the barriers to effective teamwork and the strategies they may be able to put in place to create positive outcomes
• Understand the roles different people play on a team and the importance of each role
• Understand how teamwork is managed on the job both from the perspective of the boss and from the perspective of the employee

Module 8: Health and Safety

• Identify the key responsibilities under the Health & Safety at work
• Recognise the employees and employers’ responsibilities.
• Identify what is a hazard and how to control the risks while at work
• State the health and safety control measures within your workplace
• Recognise the accident reporting process within your workplace

Module 9: Professionalism
•  Understand that professionalism is not an easy skill to develop, since it is the make-up of many different skills all “mushed” together and tends to take years of experience to perfect.
•  Learners discuss how to bridge generational, cultural, and other diversity gaps to build a new standard for professionalism in the workplace
•  Understand how we perceive others and how others may perceive us, as well as whether
these perceptions paint an accurate picture of who we are
• Learners see themselves in the future and then reflect on how the decisions they made got them to where they are

Module 10. Getting hired
•  CV Writing:
•  During a job search, no other document plays as significant a role as the CV. It shapes a prospective employer’s first impression of an applicant and has a significant influence on whether they are invited for an interview. Statistics also show that, on average, 118 people apply for the same position and recruiters usually spend no more than 10 seconds looking at skills, qualities, qualifications, and experiences quickly yet adequately. 

This module will assist the learner as follows:
•  Impresses prospective employers
•  Is relevant and focused
•  Is interesting and well-written
•  Highlights the skills and qualities the individual can offer on the job market
•  Conveys insight into who the individual is, their achievements and how they can be valuable to prospective employers. 

The job interviews
•  In addition to the CV, it is vital that applicants sharpen their job interview skills. As exciting
as it is to be invited for an interview, the process can also be a daunting one should an
applicant not be au fait with the correct etiquette and interview best practices. This module
helps learners prepare for an interview

This module will assist the learner as follows:
•  Provide the learners with the essential skills needed for a successful job interview
•  Provide guidelines for answering difficult interview questions
•  Show learners how to engage in interview behaviour, which gives a favourable impression and reveals their true potential
•  Make use of role-playing

Module 11. Basic computer literacy
•  Understand basic computer terminology
•  Perform the basic functions of using a laptop computer
•  Basic typing and developing keyboard techniques
•  Work with Google Chrome features and how they are used with a •  Windows operating


Improve their computer literacy in their current jobs

•  Basic MS Word
•  Basic MS Excel
•  Email accounts, including outlook & google and good ethics
•  Internet interfacing
